Comments: The elusive Deignans, After 30+ years, I am still trying to locate my Deignan's. Information I've acquired is: John Deignan, a Soldier, and Mary Durnin Means. married 1845 in St. Mary's Visitation in Houlton. Maine. 1880 census cites John Deignan born in France, spouse, born in Ireland. Where in France would John Deignan have gone? Also, "New France" is in Brunswick, Maine. Have checked Military in Northern US, none match my Deignan's. Also, his spouse, shows Catherine Means. but not from Houlton, ME. Can anyone give me some fresh ideas? I'm 88 years young and would sure like to find my family before??????

Comments: Hello to All, Happy New Year to all here. We are so happy to have found this Deignan family page. My husband's grandfather was Philip A Degnan, of the Bronx NYC. He married Eva Mae Riehl after graduating from Georgetown University as a medical doctor. His father was James Degnan married to Elizabeth, together they had two daughters and a son. We would love to learn more about his family. If any of this sounds familiar, please contact us. Warm regards!

Comments: Have spent years trying to reach over the ocean to Ireland, where my great grandfather came from, at least this is what his US Army record cites. He was John Wellington Deignan who served as a Union soldier in 1870 He was discharged because of consumption, then moved to Illinois, married my ggrandmother Julia Osborn, then went to Stuart, Iowa and found work to help provide for his family. Census records show him as John Daken, born in Maine, his father also John Deignan born in France, his mother Mary, born in Ireland. I've checked with the Local Parish in Houlton, ME. and received their Bans of marriage. The Parish Priest said there was a child John also on the church record. Do I believe the Church records or the Military. Hopefully someone will have the answer. I would sure love to find out where in Ireland the family came from. Dianne Deignan Arthur.
